Does Martin’s arrival spell the end for Ronan Curtis?

On Monday, Portsmouth announced the signing of 22-year-old winger Josh Martin on a short-term deal. Having reportedly trained with the Blues for a couple of weeks, Mousinho and co pulled the trigger and picked up the free agent, likely after the news of Tino Anjorin’s injury.

But what, if anything, does that mean for Ronan Curtis?

The Republic of Ireland international has been out with an injury since last season, and turned down a reduced contract offer to remain a free agent. Then, when fit again, Ronan would be in a stronger position to negotiate, either with Portsmouth or other clubs.

Ronan Curtis’ family have been very active on social media, and following Pompey’s FA Cup exit to Chesterfield last week, his brother posted on his Instagram saying “That’s What Happens When They Say They Don’t Need RC11”.

Was this an indication that Pompey had already decided not to re-sign the winger? Curtis’ future remains unclear, and the arrival of another free agent in his position will certainly cast further doubt.

The 27-year-old has made 226 appearances for Pompey, scoring 57 goal becoming the highest goalscorer of the 21st century for the club.

Josh Martin arrives as a free agent from Norwich City, having made 17 League One appearances on loan at Barnsley last season, scoring once.
