Pompey Women boss Jay Sadler issued a rallying cry to supporters, saying “We are going to need the noise again Sunday to make something special happen”.
Speaking to The 1898 after his side’s 4-0 win over London Bees, Sadler’s attentions turn to Sunday’s FA Cup fixture against Southampton.
“It’s going to be really important to get as many Pompey fans down as possible. We understand how important this fixture is to our supporters as well as to the wider community and the city as a whole.
“This game means more than just football, and the fact it’s in the FA Cup third round adds more spice! We understand the challenges we’re going to face, they’re obviously a Championship team and play in the league above. They’re a professional outfit with really good players and they’re doing well in the league.

“When we can get H&W rocking as we have done this season, we’ve drawn in some real big crowds and used their energy we’ve heard their noise and it helps. When you’ve got a big crowd behind you, and when you’ve got togetherness, quality and belief that this group has anything can happen. We want to make something special happen on Sunday.
“Havant is a fantastic ground, it’s served us well for a number of years and we’ve built a real good connection with the Club and the local community. We’re really proud to call that place our home, and this season we’ve been in fantastic form there. A lot of that has been down to the fans, they have played a massive part in that. We’ve built a real good fan base down there that’s increasing week on week. And we hear their noise and feel their energy and it helps us. We’re going to need it again this Sunday.
“It’s going to be a difficult game, we’re under no illusions about that. When you look at the two sides, they’re in the league above and competing for a place in the Super League. They’re a professional outfit and have recruited well, they’ve got some real good players. But when we get H&W rocking and make it hostile and difficult for the opposition with the fans behind us, we know as a whole club we have the energy, belief, quality to make something special happen.
“We want to continually inspire, and this is the big thing about women’s football and the culture in the women’s game. Yes we want to make it hostile and make it difficult, we understand the magnitude, however we also want to inspire the young girls and boys watching us play. It could be them one day at Fratton Park or H&W wearing the Blue of Pompey and we want to show them that when you do wear that shirt you wear it with pride and passion, you leave every ounce on the pitch and that will be the message for the players come Sunday.”
