Richardson named early favourite

Leam Richardson has emerged as the early favourite to replace Danny Cowley as Portsmouth manager.

Bet Victor have placed the former Wigan boss at 1/1 to take the hot seat at Fratton Park. Richardson, 43, received international praise for his swift action to save the life of striker Charlie Wyke after he suffered a cardiac arrest in training.

Richardson was appointed Wigan manager following Paul Cook’s resignation in 2020, and managed to win League One and take Wigan back to the Championship. He was sacked in November 2022 following six straight defeats and has yet to return to management.

He does have history in PO4, acting as Paul Cook’s assistant from 2015-2017 and overseeing the Blues League Two title win.

Other names on the list include former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder at 8/1, former Charlton manager Lee Bowyer at 12/1 and recently-sacked Norwich manager, Dean Smith at 14/1.

With news only breaking of Cowley’s sacking late last night, it’s still very early in the managerial search however time is of the essence for Portsmouth. The January Transfer Window has opened, and Pompey face Tottenham in the FA Cup on Saturday.
